My Journey with Wolfdogs
My experience with wolfdogs began when I was just 19 years old. I had just gotten my first wolfdog and I could not have been more excited. I had an introduction to wolfdogs after having met a few at the sled dog kennel, which is what sparked my interest in owning one. So I did what many people do, I went online and searched where I could get one. I came across a breeder and she just happened to have an 11 week old high content wolfdog puppy that had just been returned to her. This should have been my first clue for the upcoming challenges ahead… But I was young and naive, and had completely convinced myself that I was perfectly capable of caring for a wolfdog. As you might be able to imagine, I was in for a wild ride. Little did I know then, bringing Kuna into my life would completely define who I became.
Throughout my journey with Kuna, I learnt so many amazing things, not only about wolfdogs, but also about nature and the wilderness. I fell head over heels in love with ‘the breed’ and ultimately dedicated my life to rescuing wolfdogs and educating people about them. For those of you not familiar, I am the Founder of Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary. We are one of the biggest wolfdog sanctuaries in all of North America and currently, the only wolfdog sanctuary in all of Canada. We have 43 permanent resident wolfdogs and have rescued and rehomed countless more. Needless to say, through the past 15 years of working with wolfdogs I have learnt an immense amount about successfully caring for them. My true passion lies in sharing my love and my knowledge of these amazing animals so that us as humans can do what is right when it comes to wolfdogs. Whether that means dispelling the common misconceptions people may hold, going into the specific details on what successful ownership looks like, or providing support to those who may be struggling with their wolfdogs.
Ultimately, I want to provide a place for people to turn to when they need any kind of information on wolfdogs. I want to provide the resources I needed when I first learnt about wolfdogs, fell in love with them, and then struggled caring for one.
I hope you are able to take some valuable information away from this space and are able to fall deeply in love with wolfdogs in the same way that I have.
